Houston County board presents slight overall millage decrease, higher unincorporated fire millage

Chairman Perdue presented the County's proposed property tax rates at a special meeting on Aug. 19, 2025, saying the "new proposed millage rate is 8.45, down from 8.501, and the new Fire Millage for unincorporated Houston County will be 1.677, up from 1.177." He explained how assessed values, state rules and exemptions factor into revenue and described budget priorities including public safety staffing and county efficiency.
Commissioner Byrd, Commissioner Robinson and Commissioner Gottwals praised the clarity of the presentation. Several members of the public raised questions at the hearing about House Bill 581, senior exemptions, EMS funding and whether the presentation would be posted online; Chairman Perdue answered each question and said he would make the presentation available online. The meeting closed with a unanimous motion to adjourn.
