Public commenters challenge commissioner pay increase and urge election process changes

Two members of the public used the comment period to raise concerns about county policy and election administration. Deanna Hardy of Brigham read a statement objecting to what she called a $3,000 salary increase for each county commissioner and said the Box Elder Committee of Liberty opposes a rural grant program on constitutional grounds, citing Utah Constitution Article 12, Section 20. “Your constituents are struggling and need your help in reducing their property taxes,” Hardy said, adding that the salary structure should align with average local incomes.
Fred Hayes, speaking for the Bear River precinct, urged the commission to consider returning to precinct‑based single‑day paper ballots, saying electronic tallies and mail ballots have produced vulnerabilities and noting an ongoing federal lawsuit seeking access to registration information. Hayes asked whether the commission would begin a series of public meetings to collect precinct input on election process changes. Commissioners listened but did not commit to immediate policy action during the public comment period.
