One candidate with transportation planning work said she often looks to the city’s comprehensive plan first but tries to bring broader regional lessons back to local cases. Several applicants said they would prioritize traffic patterns, fire access and neighborhood context when weighing zoning change requests, and several emphasized a premise that the commission’s role is to provide an objective, plan‑based recommendation to city council.

During questioning on projects that are consistent with the comprehensive plan but opposed by many residents, multiple applicants said they would weigh the plan heavily while listening to residents’ concerns — separating emotional opposition from concrete impacts such as traffic or safety. Candidates also said they expected to prepare for meetings by reviewing the packets staff provides five days in advance and, where useful, visiting sites to understand context on the ground.
