Peekskill staff, consultants launch formal comprehensive‑plan process

Chair opened the June 9 meeting by introducing a short presentation on the city’s comprehensive plan and asked staff to lead off. Carol, the staff presenter, said the city has hired Interborough Community Partners as the lead consultant to aggregate prior planning work into a single 10‑year vision.
Carol told the commission the plan will examine five focus areas — land use, transportation and traffic safety, housing, resiliency and sustainability, and economic development — and that the work will include walking audits, thematic working groups, and outreach through community ambassadors. She said the effort will be “approximately 18 month to 2 year” in duration and that the planning commission will review and make a formal recommendation before council adoption.
The commission asked how residents would be selected for the resident advisory committee and community ambassadors. Staff said the city will use a lottery with screening for geographic, racial/ethnic and age representation and will do targeted outreach at the high school, churches and business groups. Commissioners were urged to encourage signups during June so the team can move into the planning phase.
The presentation materials and a flyer in English and Spanish will be posted on the city planning web page and staff encouraged commissioners and residents to attend an open house this Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to learn more and provide input.
