Potter County authorizes Diwali fireworks sales for Oct. 24'Nov. 3

The Potter County Commissioners voted unanimously to allow state-permitted vendors to sell fireworks during a two-week window to coincide with Diwali (Oct. 24 through midnight Nov. 3). The request was presented by Laura Smith (S13), representing the Unwinds, who said the authorization would let community members buy fireworks closer to the festival celebration date "to celebrate the triumph of good over evil."

County staff and the fire chief reviewed safety and enforcement contexts. The fire chief (S15) said he could not point to a safety reason to object and noted that the authorization governs sales only; it does not change where or how residents may legally use fireworks (use outside city limits on private property remains governed by state/city rules). S10 moved to authorize sales for the stated period and the motion passed 5-0.

Why it matters: The vote aligns temporary sales windows with a religious and cultural holiday and clarifies that sales authorization is a licensing decision for permitted vendors, not a change to use or display regulations enforced by the sheriff or fire department.
