Intermodal Center requests modernization after multiple elevator failures

He described a 'perfect storm' where all three elevators experienced outages this year—one took 3.5 weeks to fix, another nearly six months, and a third remained out of service. Jeff said the manufacturer's control system is out of business, parts are unavailable and staff have been rebuilding parts while seeking a permanent modernization. He said the modernization would replace control and mechanical systems and restore reliable service for Amtrak platform access, Greyhound luggage handling and public access to the second floor.
Council members asked clarifying questions about elevator locations and current status; Jeff said two elevators are operational and one remains down, and that the escalator for Amtrak was also inoperable due to parts availability. Staff noted Greyhound pays a share (about 14.4%) for their elevator but that Amtrak's share depends on prior lease calculations.
Next steps: staff requested council consideration of a special budget ordinance to fund the elevator modernization and will provide further information on cost shares for Amtrak and Greyhound where available.
