Council increases minimum spacing between gas stations after public hearing

Taylor City Council members voted to amend the city’s use requirements to increase the minimum separation between automobile filling stations after a public hearing and council discussion. Staff initially proposed a 750‑foot spacing standard; multiple councilmembers proposed increasing that distance to limit proliferation and give the city time to study effects.

Council members debated whether an immediate change would disqualify applicants already in process and whether the change would require a second reading. Staff advised some adjustments to spacing and noted applicants already in the pipeline would generally not be affected. One council member suggested 1,200 feet; another proposed 1,250 feet during the meeting. The council ultimately adopted an amendment increasing the separation target discussed during the hearing and approved the motion on a voice vote.

Council also discussed the purpose of a previous moratorium to study clustering of gas stations and the role of variances for exceptional cases. Staff said the measure is intended to curb an overabundance of stations on corners and to align with what some comparable cities do.
