Jackson County Veterans Affairs reports benefit increases, explores volunteer van program

The county's Veterans Affairs office reported routine casework and outreach activities and said it continues to see growth in claims and benefits. Staff said they checked the status of 37 open claims in April, processed 29 decisions, filed eight new claims and worked on appeals and dependent benefits. "In March, we had a total of 436 veterans, and or their eligible dependents receiving $892,281 in benefits," the representative said.
Staff also updated the board on a van program intended to transport veterans. The contact for the van program told staff the county would have an approximate cost-share of $600 and that volunteer drivers would need to be coordinated; staff said the donated van is currently in repairs but that one volunteer driver has completed the clearance process. Veterans Affairs staff said they will follow up to confirm monthly ride needs and coordination details with the program contact.
The office announced upcoming outreach events including a veterans-focused drive-in movie (resource vendors invited and proof of service checked at the gate), a Liberty Bell exhibit appearance by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, and a June 18 VFW appreciation dinner. The board accepted and placed on file the Veterans Affairs meeting minutes for April after a motion and voice vote.
