VDOT repurposing request: board hears plan to replace low-water bridge using rural discretionary funds

Carter said the current culvert-like pipe structure often floods and replacing it with a box structure would increase water flow and allow more debris to pass. He told the board they could "get the boxes for $30k less than what they typically cost" and that using $300,000 from the approximately $753,000 fund balance would not deplete the account. Carter also noted ongoing pedestrian bridge maintenance costs of about $20,000 a year per bridge and said some low-use spans may be considered for closure; Supervisor Mark Dotson confirmed alternate routes will be available when the bridge is closed for work.
Vice Chairman Dennis Morris expressed support for pursuing the cost savings; Mr. Carter said he did not need a resolution but wanted the board aware of the proposed use of funds.
