Transfer station reports heavy spring cleanup tonnage; recycling contamination a growing problem

Transfer Station Manager Scottie Cassell reported to the Board that spring cleanup produced significant tonnages at county facilities: February totaled 701 tons; March reached 957 tons; and April recorded 886 tons. Cassell noted additional unweighed loads (198 tons not weighed in during March and 236 tons not weighed in during April) and said daily average incoming trash reached double-digit tons during the spring cleanup.
Cassell warned that when trash is mixed into recycling trailers the entire bin is rejected and treated as trash, undermining the county's recycling program. He urged residents to avoid commingling materials and to use the labeled bins correctly, saying proper sorting keeps the program efficient and cost-effective.
