Board approves variance for large detached structure incorporating Conex containers after applicant’s barn fire

The Preble County Board of Zoning Appeals on March 24 approved a variance allowing Ryan J. Stover to construct a 40'x50' detached structure, 17 feet high, using Conex shipping containers incorporated and sided to resemble a barn on Lot #4, Mahaffy Subdivision.
Stover told the board his previous barn burned in December and that he lost vehicles and tools in the fire. "In December my barn burnt down," he said, describing losses including a pickup truck, a boat and construction tools. He said he plans to incorporate shipping containers into a barn-like structure so stored equipment would be less vulnerable to fire.
Brad Kramer, the zoning director, explained that using a commercial container as building material is acceptable when it is integrated and concealed as part of a building. Jeff Rogers moved to approve Case 5745 under Section 1404.01, Letter D (1–6); Sarah Driver seconded and the motion passed by roll call with all members voting yes.
The approval allows the applicant to proceed with plans that meet building-department requirements for a barn-style structure; final construction details (siding, trusses and any required building permits) will be handled by the county building department and the zoning office.
