Commission approves $5,000 LATCF for sheriff handheld radio encryption

Box Elder County commissioners approved a $5,000 allocation from LATCF to encrypt handheld radios so county law enforcement can interoperate with neighboring agencies.
County auditor Charlene Larson told the commission the sheriff's office requested an additional $5,000 from the Local Transportation and Corridor Fund (LATCF) to purchase handheld radio encryption equipment so personnel can communicate with Brigham City, Tremonton and Perry. "They asked if they could get another $5,000 in the LATCF funding," Larson said.
Commissioner Perry moved to approve the $5,000 expenditure from the LATCF fund for handheld radio encryption; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Commissioners said the purchase is intended to improve public‑safety interoperability and noted there may be additional costs as agencies coordinate on radios and encryption standards.
