Presenters told the Board that state budget cuts will affect county services. Mike Pohanka said highway districts "received a hit" in the recent budget and described how cuts will be passed through to local districts. Jack Nelson said the cuts appeared bigger than the governor predicted: "the cuts were closer to $400 million instead of what the governor was hoping for." He and others warned against planning to rely on a surplus.
Ron Taylor said there was a consensus among presenters that the cuts felt too extreme and that county officials should not build plans predicated on a surplus. Presenters noted that economic growth, including a new Micron factory in the region, could increase incomes and broaden the tax base but should not be relied on as a budgetary certainty.
