County’s solid waste plan approved by KDHE; exemptions review deferred

Chris Smith, Public Works Director, told the commission that the county submitted its solid waste plan to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and that KDHE approved it. The only KDHE request was to hold the county’s annual solid waste meeting in December so materials can be submitted in January; otherwise KDHE required no changes.
Separately, County Clerk Tammi Cox presented two solid waste exemption applications. Commissioners expressed caution about expanding exemptions—Commissioner Scott Mortimer said, "if we open this up, it will domino"—and agreed by consensus to review existing exemptions at the next meeting rather than act immediately on the new applications.
