Engineer reports bridge failures, road vacations and upcoming surface work; Board approves performance bonds

County Engineer Ryne Thornburg updated the Board on secondary-roads work and specific bridge conditions on Sept. 8, 2025. Thornburg reported that the bridge east of Keystone Avenue on 130th Street has a failing pile, and the low-water crossing west of Highway 1 is being undermined so the concrete slab is acting like a bridge. The Board gave consensus for Thornburg to pursue vacating the affected road segments, which would include transferring ownership of the structure by Keystone Avenue.
The Board approved performance bonds for Iowa Bridge and Culvert to complete bridge abutment repairs on Hickory Ave (north of Highway 16, FHWA Bridge #329640) and on Hawk Drive (north of Farmington, FHWA Bridge #327570). Thornburg also reported that Hot-In-Place work north of Douds on Route V64 is finished, Norris Asphalt is scheduled for a surface lift in October, and the regrade of Eagle Drive near Selma continues. The Board authorized routine payroll and claims approvals and acknowledged a 4-year Manure Management Plan update for F&H Swine Facility (Facility #69038) before adjourning at 11:01 AM.
