Tree-service operator granted permanent variance after neighborhood assurances

The board granted Steven Massey’s request to modify a previously approved use variance to allow the operation of a tree service at his residence, subject to conditions the applicant agreed to uphold. Massey told the board he spent more than $6,000 and many hours implementing previous requirements and that he has planted screening trees and will keep materials cleared; he emphasized he will not burn or stockpile debris and will park vehicles at the rear of the property.

Staff read a letter from a neighbor indicating they would withhold opposition if Massey accepted the prior conditions, and the board approved the variance with those conditions (approval recorded as four yeses, one no, one abstain). Massey told the board, "I feel that I've went above and beyond and not bothering anybody," and staff will issue certification of the approval so he can proceed with any needed permits.
