Chawanakee Unified certifies First Interim budget, flags structural shortfall
Summary
The board certified a Positive First Interim for 2024–25 but CBO Melissa Kielpinski warned of a structural deficit driven by rising personnel and operations costs; general fund revenues were $18,676,047 against expenditures of $18,953,459.

Chawanakee Unified School District trustees certified the First Interim Budget Revision for 2024–25 at their Dec. 16 meeting and approved submission to the county with a "Positive" self-certification.
Chief Business Official Melissa Kielpinski told the board the district expects Total General Fund Revenues of $18,676,047 and Total General Fund Expenditures of $18,953,459, yielding a reported net decrease in fund balance of $556,411. She said unrestricted reserves total $765,324 and that the district projects roughly 25 new students next fiscal year, which is not enough to close the gap created by rising costs for step-and-column increases, higher goods-and-services prices, and facility operations.
Kielpinski recommended ongoing fiscal review and cross-departmental planning; Superintendent Jamie Nino said the district will convene a committee and coordinate with the county to develop an improvement plan for students with disabilities, which the district identified as an academic area needing targeted supports. The motion to approve the First Interim report was made by Trustee Jessie Hutchens, seconded by Trustee Jack Thornburg, and passed unanimously.
