Board reaffirms 2019 Second Amendment sanctuary status after substitute motion

A proposed resolution renewing support for Second Amendment rights failed to carry on its initial motion; a substitute motion reaffirming Cumberland County's 2019 Second Amendment sanctuary designation passed 4–1 on May 12, 2026, with Supervisor Bryan Hamlet the lone "nay."

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors took up a resolution renewing and reaffirming support for Second Amendment rights on May 12. Supervisor Bryan Hamlet made the initial motion to approve the resolution as presented, but the motion received no second and therefore did not pass. A substitute motion by Supervisor Paul Stimpson, seconded by Supervisor Robert Saunders Jr., reaffirmed the county's 2019 resolution designating Cumberland County a Second Amendment sanctuary and passed by the following vote: Mr. Hamlet — nay; Mr. Newman — aye; Mrs. Tyree — aye; Mr. Stimpson — aye; Mr. Saunders — aye.
