Staff urges coordinated land‑use strategy; Select Board asks for portfolio view and public process

Town staff and sustainability staff presented a broad plan to the Select Board on July 28 to coordinate conservation‑land stewardship, update aging management plans and connect long‑term land investments to the town’s budget process.

Staff noted that some management plans and baseline assessments exist for approximately 10–12 parcels, but many plans are outdated and not uniform; Sarah (sustainability/land stewardship staff) said creating a short, standardized parcel summary template would help the board evaluate maintenance needs, capital costs, and staffing implications. "So then you have 2 planning processes that are currently in place, your open space and recreation plan and your master plan... your focus could be to force the implementation of the recommendations in those plans in order to get funding or resources," staff said. Board members emphasized the need for a macro portfolio view (what the town owns, what it costs to maintain, and what uses are intended) before approving major investments such as dam repairs at the Cranberry Bog.

Staff proposed convening stakeholder forums (grouping several parcels into each forum) to gather community input and suggested digitizing management documents so they can be searched and summarized. The board responded that any future funding requests should be tied to an updated plan and recommended getting the conservation commission before the board for a dedicated conversation.
