Mayor Tracy Rodes presented the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) 'Commit to Civility' training and the accompanying resolution during old-business discussion. The program requires at least 75% of the governing board to attend a two-hour training, course participants to sign an individual pledge, adoption of a model resolution in a council meeting, and submission of a signed copy of the governing board to learning@nclm.org.
Mayor Rodes said the virtual course will be offered on Jan. 22 and will be available after June; in-person sessions have been free to NCLM members. She suggested that if the board does not participate in the NCLM training, the town could develop its own policy to define acceptable conduct during meetings, which would be especially helpful for new board members. The board did not take immediate action and will consider the matter further at a future meeting.
