Superintendent reports mural progress, instructional-hours plan and SRO interviews

"That mural at Phoenix Elementary is getting wrapped up — it's just a great, really kinda wow factor when you enter," the superintendent said, praising student and community contributions to the project. He reported the district has been tracking instructional hours closely after a canceled day and middle-school water-main breaks; a restoration plan has been prepared and the district expects to meet state requirements with an extra instructional day next year.
On policy, the superintendent said the district received an ODE notice about instructional-hour and cell-phone policy guidance and plans to return the cell-phone policy for board discussion at a future meeting to consider compliance. He also told the board that the City of Talent has included a school resource officer in its budget and that candidate interviews are scheduled for Aug. 19, with board member Rebecca invited to participate.
The board discussed logistics for providing data to lawmakers and possibly presenting restraint/seclusion data to legislators in early 2027 if the board pursues that outreach.
