Hanover DSS flags upcoming work requirements for some benefit programs, including Medicaid in 2027

Hanover County Department of Social Services staff alerted the Social Services Advisory Board that several benefit programs include or will soon include work requirements.
The presentation stated that SNAP currently carries a work requirement. Medical Assistance (Medicaid) was reported to have a work requirement beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Child-care job-search components are limited to 90 days with a possible extension, and TANF/VIEW participants are required to work 30 hours per week to remain eligible. The department noted that each program provides for certain exceptions and exemptions.
Vice Chair Dan Johnson also told the board that notifications would be coming regarding changes to benefit programs under what the packet calls the "Big Beautiful Bill." Staff advised that program participants may be connected with job coaching and training resources as some work requirements are implemented.
The board did not take a separate vote on these policy changes at the March 24 meeting; staff characterized them as implementation and notification matters being coordinated with partner agencies.
