Committee postpones detailed budget presentations until mayor’s release; schedules deep workshop

Committee members agreed to postpone detailed budget presentations until after the mayor publicly releases her proposed budget, saying numbers are necessary to make the sessions productive. A deputy mayor explained department directors were given a standardized presentation format but are not authorized to release final numbers before the mayor’s release that afternoon.

Multiple commissioners said walking through presentations without concrete budget figures would be premature. They asked departments to come to the planned workshops prepared with vacancy schedules, aging reports, and clear explanations of what would change if line items were reduced. The committee set an expectation that directors be ready to defend every dollar and to provide analysis of where savings could be found, including the impact of transferring services to constitutional officers or moving functions in‑house.

The committee also signalled that the August/September workshops will remain open to all commissioners for a committee‑of‑the‑whole approach to deeply review departmental budgets. The meeting then proceeded to other agenda items and was adjourned.
