Durham finalizes FY26 transit work program; staff launch public transit tracker and advance BRT planning

Ellen Beckman, Durham County transportation director, described priorities: enhance current service, accelerate capital projects and improve rider experience. The final work program increased some operating requests (about $7.6 million annually for service expansions and maintenance needs) and deferred a $3.75 million façade project to FY27 to align funding with the updated schedule.
Curtis Carpignato demonstrated the Durham Transit Tracker, a web tool to monitor projects such as the Durham bus stop improvement program (160+ stops completed so far) and other capital initiatives with biannual data updates. “I encourage you to look at it,” Carpignato said; staff said they will add contextual progress indicators tied to work‑program goals.
GoTriangle and city staff reported ridership growth and milestones: a record month exceeding 650,000 trips and progress on bus rapid transit planning; the work program authorizes $6 million in new BRT development funds and added staff to support BRT design. Commissioners asked about revenue forecasts, fund balance and fare‑policy work that will be developed as a policy recommendation for governing bodies to consider.
