The board discussed a commercial composting model presented previously by Clay Ezell of Compost.com (Nashville) and a pilot with Davidson County Schools that the Chair said diverted a substantial share of food waste. The Chair presented the pilot as a model for approaching commercial and institutional food-waste diversion in Sumner County.
"They were gonna save the schools money because they're taking about 30% correct my numbers wrong, Becky, of of the school's waste materials, which is food," the Chair said when summarizing the pilot's results. Board members noted that school and institutional collections are typically cleaner and easier to process than residential streams, and they recommended contacting school systems and existing vendors to explore a local pilot. The board asked staff to reach out to Compost.com and to prepare specific questions for a vendor briefing at the next meeting.
