The commission reviewed a draft voluntary heritage-tree program intended to recognize and catalogue notable trees without imposing regulatory protections on private owners.
Eric Bush described the draft as a recognition-only program with nomination forms, property-owner consent, and a commission review process: “If so, then the commission could review that tree and, you know, designate it accordingly,” he said. Commissioners discussed logistics for nominations, public outreach through the city website and partners such as KLT, and how to present candidate trees in meeting packets (photos, addresses) so commissioners could visit sites before voting.
Commissioners generally supported further review and suggested the commission take time to vet the draft at upcoming meetings, seek feedback from community partners, and consider a public open-house or roundtable to gather input before adopting an action item.
