Custer County approves deputy pay raises, authorizes COPS grant application
To help retain deputies amid regional competition, commissioners approved a pay reallocation for sheriff's deputies effective Aug. 16 and authorized applying for a COPS hiring grant that would pay 75% of certain positions' salaries.

Commissioners approved a plan to reallocate funds (from eliminating two positions) to raise pay across the sheriff's deputy line so the county need not increase its budget. A county official explained the approach keeps the change budget-neutral going forward and said raises would take effect Aug. 16 to align with payroll policy.
