Monroe County commissioners approved an extension of a private developer's reservation for 79 early-evacuation workforce-housing allocations at two Key Largo parcels while county staff reprocesses code amendments that the state had previously deemed null and void.
Devin, county staff, told the board the reservation was contingent on code amendments adopted at a prior hearing; the state later deemed those amendments null and staff does not expect them to be effective before the reservation's 08/20/2026 expiration. "That is the reason why they're requesting us, reservation extension," Devin said, explaining the developer's request to avoid lapsing the reservation while amendments are republished and processed. Commissioners expressed concern about market saturation in some islands and requested a market analysis for Marathon, Cudjoe/Cojo, Key Largo and Tavernier to ensure the units are put where demand is greatest.
After discussion, a motion to extend the reservation and to include Key Largo and Tavernier in related analyses was moved, seconded and approved with no recorded opposition.
