Commissioner seeks moratorium on data-center development amid local water concerns

Commissioner Lee Perry asked the county to add two items to the next commission agenda: a resolution creating a moratorium on data-center development countywide and a planning-commission initiative to persuade owners of unzoned parcels to zone their land.
Perry said the move is intended to give the county time to manage rapid development and to “curtail some of the issues that we've dealt with recently.” He asked planning and zoning staff to draft code changes and return them to the commission. Perry made the request during administrative reports and formally asked for the items to be scheduled at the next meeting.
The commission did not vote to adopt a moratorium at the meeting; Perry asked staff to prepare language and options. The request came amid a lengthy public-comment session in which multiple residents urged the commission to halt or slow approvals for a proposed large data center over concerns about water use, emissions and impacts to the Great Salt Lake. Several public speakers recommended using full statutory review timelines or creating a referendum to let voters decide.
