The Waco ISD Board approved a construction change directive (RPC #38) to replace and upgrade the HVAC ductwork at South Waco Elementary, a late‑stage addition identified during the project quality‑assurance walkthroughs.
Mrs. Barrera, presenting the request, said the contractor and designer developed plans and pricing after district staff asked the project team to examine whether duct replacement would materially improve classroom ventilation and comfort. "The HVAC system upgrade means that South Waco Elementary School will be completely new," she said, describing revised scope and contingency funding used to cover the work.
Trustees pressed staff on whether the existing ductwork required replacement and on schedule and overtime implications. Project staff said the existing system was functional but that splitting supply into four grills per classroom would improve air circulation, reduce noise and increase overall comfort and performance under current indoor‑air quality standards. The request includes return‑duct cleaning and some overtime; staff said they had a top limit on overtime costs but were still finalizing the hourly estimate with the contractor.
Trustee Grant moved to approve the administration’s recommendation; the motion was seconded and the board voted unanimously to approve the revised pricing and construction change directive. Administration said the work will be completed during the summer construction window to keep the overall project on schedule.
