Commission recommends zoning code changes to treat data centers and power facilities as conditional uses

After four months of review, the Planning Commission recommended that City Council add definitions and permitted/conditional‑use language for data centers, data warehousing and power generating facilities to the zoning code, and directed that notices go to property owners within 200 feet.
The Commission reviewed staff research on data centers and related facilities and unanimously voted to recommend zoning code changes to City Council that would add definitions and clarify how data centers, data warehousing, and power generating facilities should be regulated.
Zoning Commissioner Niki Warncke summarized the review and told the Commission that notices would go to property owners within 200 feet and that the proposed recommendations would include analysis of sound, screening and access requirements. Warncke said "the recommendation to Council would include Principally Permitted Uses and Definitions be added to the existing Zoning Code for Data Centers, Data Warehousing and Power Generating Facilities." Commissioner Gary Butler noted business concerns about power usage. The Commission voted to forward the recommended code changes to City Council for consideration.
The recommendation will trigger a Council process that includes notification and further review prior to any code adoption.
