Mapleton recommends $150,000 water reserve; PFAS countertop option discussed

Mayor Rhonda Hodges opened the water-budget discussion by reviewing Profit & Loss for the water fund from May 2021 through April 2024 and recommending a larger reserve. "Rhonda recommended that we increase the water certificate of deposit with another $ 50,000 bringing this to $ 150,000 to set aside if we would need to pay off loans," the minutes state.
Council members discussed raising contract services and operations annually and increasing repairs, maintenance and equipment to fund a planned program of vault inspections and inventory replacement. The meeting record notes council consideration of PFAS options for residents; Water Chair Ben Hausam reported on a vendor offering grant support and countertop units that include two years' worth of cartridges. Ben said he does not view the countertop unit as the best long-term solution and said he would continue exploring alternatives.
The council determined the water budget would not need to draw on the fund's bank balance this fiscal year, and members discussed delaying payoff of low-interest loans for now. The action leaves the increased CD as a contingency while staff continue planning for inspections and equipment purchases.
