Small schools report enrollment declines and set reading, math goals

Principal Tiffany presented enrollment and staffing updates for Silvercrest and Scotts Mills, reporting lower enrollment and several reduced positions versus the prior year. For Silvercrest, enrollment declined from 141 to 116; the school is one teacher short and has fewer instructional assistants than the previous year. K–5 reading (DIBELS) was at 49% at or above benchmark in fall and 48% in winter; math (I-Ready) rose from 11% in fall to 29% in winter.
At Scotts Mills, staff reductions and enrollment declines were similar: total enrollment fell from 157 to 141 year-over-year. K–5 reading at or above benchmark was 43% in fall and 44% in winter; K–5 math improved from 6% to 19% at or above benchmark. Both schools adopted schoolwide goals: raise combined K–8 reading to 75% and math to 50% at or above grade level by spring. The principals described uses of district curriculum, PLCs and MTSS/MTSS meeting structures to target instruction and interventions amid reduced staffing.
Board members asked for additional data breakdowns (for example certified FTE over time) and pressed staff to track where students who disenrolled went. Tiffany and district staff said they would provide deeper enrollment and staffing breakdowns on request and that work is underway on a 10-year enrollment forecast for planning.
