Board narrows dress-code language, approves wrist-length coverage requirement for form-fitting pants
Summary
After public testimony and debate, trustees rejected a fingertip-length requirement for leggings but unanimously approved a wrist-length coverage standard and a wrist-length shorts standard; the changes were presented by the assistant superintendent.
At the Sept. 15 board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Ryan Coleman presented draft options for changes to the district dress code developed in collaboration with campus principals.
A motion to require that tights, yoga pants, leggings/jeggings or other form-fitting pants be worn with an article of clothing at least fingertip length failed on a 3–4 vote. Trustee Mark Freeman then moved a substitute measure requiring that such form-fitting pants be worn with a nontransparent, wrist-length article of clothing; that motion passed 7–0. The board also approved a separate motion establishing wrist-length as the minimum for shorts.
Multiple parents spoke during public comment urging changes to dress-code enforcement; commenters described stress and difficulty meeting fingertip-length standards and sought clearer, less punitive rules. The board directed administrators to implement the approved wrist-length language and did not adopt the fingertip-length option.
