Council asks staff to study temporary ADA access for park and evaluate bathroom compliance

Council discussed access barriers at the city park and potential short-term measures to improve access for the fireworks event and for residents with mobility limitations. Staff explained that because the area is currently undeveloped open grass the park is not legally required to be fully ADA‑compliant for interior surfaces, but that adding trails or facilities would trigger broader obligations.

"At the point, you put a trail through that park, that changes things," staff said, and recommended targeted work—such as a compacted path from a parking area near the bathrooms or a temporary landing pad for holiday viewing—rather than full retrofit immediately. Council asked staff to inspect bathroom facilities for compliance, produce options and costs for a temporary access path for the upcoming event, and if needed return with grant or budget proposals for larger improvements.
