Malabar approves $60,936 engineering task order for Benjamin Road improvements

The Malabar Town Council on July 20 approved a task order for Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. to produce preliminary roadway plans for Benjamin Road at an estimated cost of $60,936. The motion, made by Council Member Marisa Acquaviva and seconded by Council Member Mary Hofmeister, passed unanimously (4-0).
Town Manager Lisa Morrell told the council the task order will fund extensive surveying, engineering and stormwater studies because Benjamin Road includes multiple driveways, telephone poles and non-uniform alignment. "The project is estimated at $60,936 to provide plans for the improvement of Benjamin Road," Morrell said. The preliminary plans are intended to define the design and a realistic cost estimate for later construction and permitting with state and county agencies.
Resident Brian Vail questioned whether neighboring jurisdictions (Grant/Valkaria) would share costs; Morrell said the original memorandum of understanding assigns maintenance and historical responsibility for the road to Malabar, and any contribution by Grant/Valkaria would require separate agreement. Council members emphasized this step is primarily technical: once Bowman returns plans and cost estimates, council will have a clearer choice about funding or seeking partners and grants.
The contract authorization directs the town manager to execute the agreement with Bowman Consulting of Melbourne, FL, at $60,936.
