Lisa: City support plus fundraisers keep arts center programming running

Lisa, who the mayor introduced to speak about the arts center and museum, told the commission the city’s recurring support plus a recent $7,500 donation and rent account for most of the center’s core budget.
"So it came up to 60,000," Lisa said, describing how she combined the city funds, Rob's figures and the donation in the packet. She said the rent for a separate art studio is charged to the economic development fund rather than the general fund.
Lisa outlined planned fundraisers and volunteer contributions to make up remaining operating needs. She said the arts center will bring back a gala, stage more classes (with Cheryl Pearson assisting), and expand the successful "night of 1,000 drawings" fundraiser, which she said raised about $1,500 last year.
"We raised about $1,500," Lisa said of the postcard fundraiser; she also said she will pursue grants for roof work and expects utilities to remain a pressure point.
The mayor and commissioners asked whether current rent and donations cover utilities and maintenance; Lisa said the base rent and contributions cover the core operating budget but do not reliably cover utility spikes or major repairs. She said some roof repairs will be pursued via grants and added fundraising would continue.
The arts center update was presented early in the special meeting and commissioners thanked Lisa for expanding programming while relying on volunteers.
