County approves permitting program for oversized and overweight vehicles

The Sweetwater County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously March 3 to enter Resolution 2026-03-CC-02 and begin a permitting program for oversized and overweight vehicles on county roads.
Undersheriff Joe Tomich presented the proposed regulations and told the board the process began with the county in January 2024 and that public comments were solicited through Feb. 20; none were received. “We are looking at going forward with the hearing and, entering the resolution this morning to, start the permitting process for oversized and overweight vehicles on Sweetwater County roads,” Tomich said. He told commissioners the county intends to coordinate with the Wyoming Department of Transportation at ports of entry and notify local companies, including oilfield carriers, about the new permitting process.
Commissioner Toman asked how truckers will learn about the rule; Tomich said the county will work with YDOT at ports of entry and send notices to companies likely to operate on county roads. The board closed the public hearing with no in-person comments and approved the resolution on a voice vote. The county indicated a planned go-live date of April 1 for the permitting program.
The action was presented to the commissioners as a regulatory cleanup and safety measure; the board signaled intent to move to enforcement once the permitting system is in place.
