Legislator Nolan introduced a resolution for September (Resolution 458) that would codify the Ulster County Sheriff's internal high‑speed pursuit policy as a countywide model for community policing. Nolan said she discussed the issue with Sheriff Juan Figueroa and brought the sheriff's existing policy forward so other law‑enforcement agencies operating in the county could adopt safer pursuit practices.
"High speed pursuits are one of the most dangerous parts of law enforcement activities," Nolan said, urging members to review the supporting research she offered to provide. She emphasized the proposal is intended to reduce crashes, injuries and danger to officers, suspects and bystanders. The measure was introduced for later consideration so legislators could study the policy before the Sept. legislative session.
