County authorizes application for phragmites control grant

The Greeley County Board of Commissioners authorized Weed Superintendent Jeremy Straka to apply for a grant from the Sandhills Weed Management Area to survey and spray phragmites along river systems at no cost to the county. Straka joined the meeting by phone and explained that helicopter surveys and spraying would occur in late September or early October. Commissioners stressed that public notification — including newspaper advertisements and direct landowner contact — should precede any spraying.
Concerned about effects near residences and gardens, commissioners required that notification plans be implemented before work proceeds. Commissioner Joe Leslie moved to authorize the superintendent to apply for the grant and Chairman Jordan Foltz seconded; the motion carried on roll call (Leslie yes, Foltz yes, Wadsworth absent).
