PRCAC presses county to re-evaluate state timber-permit rules for Point Roberts

A PRCAC member said she has asked county staff to ask state natural-resource planners to consider Point Roberts' unique geography when applying timber permit rules; the county has referred the inquiry to planning staff and the committee will continue follow-up.
A PRCAC participant reported she had drafted a letter to Whatcom County's Mark Pestonius asking the county to request that the Department of Natural Resources consider Point Roberts' separated geography when applying timber-permit rules designed for large forested areas.
"I have written to Mark Pestonius ... asking the Department of Natural Resources to alter their timber permits policies, to address the fact that Point Roberts is 5 square miles of property detached from the state of Washington," the participant said. She reported that Pestonius referred the inquiry to natural-resource planners in the county planning and development office and that she will continue to press for a substantive county response.
Committee members noted the referral indicates the county took the request seriously enough to route it to the appropriate planners, but members asked for clarity about which division will handle the inquiry and what level of review will occur. The PRCAC agreed the member should follow up and report back when the county identifies the specific planners or division handling the matter.
