Marina redevelopment framed as central to Point Roberts strategy

Port economic development staff said the Point Roberts marina is both a community asset and an economic opportunity, proposing a range of redevelopment concepts from a working waterfront to a maritime village and eco-marina. The presentation emphasized that upland acreage connected to the marina and improved slips could raise utilization and create revenue streams to support further investment.

"The marina is an absolute jewel as it is," Schroeder said, and he urged community visioning to decide whether redevelopment should be public, private or a hybrid. He noted the implementation table in the study identifies short-term actions such as defining a desired redevelopment scheme and convening a stakeholder steering committee to guide any acquisition or rehabilitation steps.

Speakers discussed feasibility concerns about acquiring the privately owned marina and suggested alternative sites (for example the Blackfish Resort property) could be considered for development if acquisition proves unlikely. Committee members asked for follow-up that clarifies ownership options, resourcing and how marina redevelopment would link to sewer and upland development plans.
