County staff warn multi-parcel ownership can trigger multiple solid waste fees

Ronald Tittle, the county's chief deputy appraiser, told commissioners that multi-parcel ownership has long complicated property billing in Sedgwick County and influenced the committee's fee redesign. "Multi parcel is something that has plagued Sedgwick County for a while," Tittle said, explaining that multiple-parcel owners can receive multiple solid waste fees and that combining parcels typically costs money up front but can recoup savings within three to five years for many property types.

Staff and commissioners said the county will step up communication to help owners merge parcels where appropriate. Susan said the county will include a larger informational insert and a web page with a QR code to explain how owners can work with title companies to consolidate parcels. Commissioners raised examples (churches with seven parcels; large campuses like Wichita State that sit on multiple sections) showing why parcel mapping and state mapping rules complicate a simple consolidation strategy.
