Senate approves IPERS modernization bill allowing limited data release and payment flexibility
Summary
House File 23 45 (substituted for Senate File 2297), proposed by IPERS, was amended to conform and passed the Senate; changes allow limited release of member name/address to the state treasurer to help locate beneficiaries, move flexible timing of benefit-statement distribution, and permit monthly payments via reloadable cards.
Senator Westrich, the senator from Waipoloa, described the bill as an IPERS proposal that contains three modernization updates: allowing IPERS to release a member or beneficiary's legal name and last known address to the state treasurer to assist in locating individuals; removing the January–July distribution window for annual benefit statements to permit incremental distribution throughout the year; and allowing retired members to receive monthly payments on a reloadable payment card while retaining check options.
Senate Amendment 51-50, conforming the bill to House File 23 45, was adopted and the Senate agreed to substitute the House file. The substituted bill was read for the final time and passed on a 46–0 roll call; the sponsor asked unanimous consent to withdraw the companion Senate file, which was granted.
