Superintendent Bryan McKenna told the board that construction work at Cherryland Middle School is nearing completion in the wings currently finished: siding and landscaping are almost done and contractors are laying brick on the arts wing with hoped completion by spring 2026. McKenna said the district hopes social studies rooms will be ready by winter break, which would remove the need for some portable classrooms.
On professional development, McKenna said K–12 staff participated in restorative practices training, and cabinet members received PCM leadership training. Regarding the state budget, McKenna said the district is "still learning all the impacts of the new budget," but confirmed that free/reduced‑price lunch and rural transportation reimbursement will continue; however, School Resource Officer and mental‑health funding will require competitive grant applications going forward.
The construction updates signal reduced short‑term space constraints if the social studies rooms are completed as expected; the superintendent did not announce new capital appropriations at the Oct. 13 meeting but will report additional bond updates through regular reports.
