The Granite School District Board of Education voted Sept. 3 to begin the notifications required under state law for possible school closures and boundary changes tied to the 3500 S. Corridor Study.
Steve Hogan, the district's Planning and Boundaries Director, presented the Population Analysis Committee recommendations and said one study area was expanded to add Olene Walker and Wilson elementaries in anticipation of a family shelter opening later this year. Karyn Winder moved the first motion to initiate the notification required for the potential school closure of Redwood Elementary and Orchard Elementary; Julie Jackson seconded. The motion passed 7-0.
Board members followed with motions to initiate notifications for boundary adjustments and to potentially alter programs at Valley Crest, Monroe, Hillsdale and/or Stansbury elementaries. "This is necessary to comply with H.B. 341," Hogan told the board during the presentation. Each motion passed unanimously 7-0.
The actions begin a formal notification and review process specified in H.B. 341 and do not in themselves close schools or finalize boundaries. The board's motions authorize staff to start the required outreach and notification steps; subsequent public notices and hearings will determine next steps and any formal closures or program changes.
