Committee votes to add possibility of controlled burns to habitat management plan after Indigenous stewardship presentation

The Conservation Restriction Committee voted to add "the possibility of using controlled burns to maintain the habitat" to its Habitat Management Plan after a presentation by the Indigenous Landscape Initiative.
Presenter Shlomia Lightfoot told members that many local habitats are maintained by fire and that some species respond positively: "fire a type of habitat that is, fire main that is sort of fundamentally fire formed and fire maintained," she said, explaining that regular low-intensity burns can restore soil conditions and improve nesting habitat for species such as Blanding's turtles. Lightfoot offered to share relevant research and to partner on local monitoring.
Emily Fine moved the committee recommendation into the Habitat Management Plan, saying, "I move...that the possibility of using controlled burns...be added to our habitat management plan," and the motion was seconded and approved on a roll-call vote. The committee discussed safety protocols and neighbor notifications; Lightfoot described burn prescriptions, wind‑direction restrictions, fire breaks, dividing sites into burn units and notifying neighbors to reduce smoke impacts.
Next steps: staff will add language to the habitat plan and share the revised draft with Missy Ann for review; Lightfoot offered contacts for water‑resource managers to coordinate any burn planning near water infrastructure. The committee will incorporate technical prescriptions and outreach measures before any implementation.
