Brown County BZA approves front-setback variance for Randolph pole barn

The Brown County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance allowing Scott Randolph to build a 40-foot by 52-foot pole barn closer to State Road 135 South than the ordinance’s 75-foot centerline requirement. Staff reported the petitioner had prepared the site and that meeting the 75-foot setback would require substantial additional fill (about 10 feet of extra fill to reach the same elevation), creating a steep slope and practical constraints.

In presenting the petition, the petitioner explained the area south of the proposed site is low and wet and the property includes brush the owner intends to keep for buffering. Board members noted adjacent properties already have accessory buildings closer to the road, describing the reduced setback as the local norm; the board moved and approved the variance. Staff told the petitioner to complete building-permit paperwork and noted additional administrative steps before construction.
