Trustees hear mobilization update for Hawaii Combined school; scope scaled back to core campus

The board received an update on the Hawaii Combined School construction project and was told contractors have mobilized and begun earthwork. Matt Stolke said MGM, working with Autra Construction, is "moving dirt" and that site preparation began in mid-March.
"So started March maybe 18th," Stolke said when asked about the start date. He described a narrowed scope that focuses on the school site itself plus playgrounds and essential site work; previously discussed elements such as a bus barn, a CTE building, and football/track facilities are not in the current contract.
The board also discussed fundraising for additional site amenities and whether the old school building would be demolished or repurposed; Stolke said plans remain uncertain and that demolition had been discussed but final decisions depend on funding and stakeholders.
Procurement details: a board member asked whether the project used a Construction Manager at Risk (CMR) delivery; staff said it went to a typical bid process and that contingency set aside for change orders is 1.5% of project cost.
