Town engineering reports progress, delays on Hencoff stormwater project; specialized treatment chambers present installation challenges

Town engineering updated the Select Board on the Hencoff stormwater project, noting schedule slippage after contractor changes and that the team rebid and reengaged a new contractor who made rapid progress. Engineering explained the project is treating the first inch of runoff with specialized treatment cartridges ("jellyfish" chambers) designed to reduce bacteria and nitrogen that have been contributing to beach closures.
Tim Lyden described installation and elevation issues with the prefabricated chambers and said crews have placed binder courses and temporary surfacing while final cartridge installation and top-coating are scheduled for September. "Those cartridges are gonna treat a lot of the bacteria and a lot of the nitrogen things that are coming down the hill that are causing beach closures," Lyden said. He told the board the team aims to complete major work and landscape restoration by mid-September and will return with a final overlay schedule.
